The Challenges of Accurately Identifying Indigenous Students
According to the final report from the AIR Equity Initiative-supported Indigenous Student Identification Project, undercounting of Indigenous students in public schools may be as high as 70%.
This means schools may be missing out on federal and state funding for programs that support Indigenous students. AIR's Nara Nayar explains how students are counted, why accurate data matters, and where challenges arise in practice.
