Client Services in State and Local Evaluation

AIR’s state and local evaluation projects marshal a broad range of expertise and resources to support state education agencies and district offices as they decide whether to retain, revise, or end a policy or program. The projects bring together experts from many areas of education research to empower states and districts to address challenges in district and school reform, educator quality, special education, school financing, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), literacy, virtual learning, extended learning, English learning, early childhood education, and college and career readiness.

We work with clients to articulate the questions.

The McDougal Family Foundation turned to AIR as a thought partner to conceptualize and launch its High School Success Initiative. AIR worked closely with the foundation to create a logic model for the initiative, draft the request for proposals, advise in the review of proposals, and create evaluations for each grantee.

We find the answers to clients’ questions.

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education sought to better understand the impact of the Office of District and School Turnaround supports to districts that serve the highest percentages of students living in poverty in the Commonwealth. AIR’s evaluation assessed both implementation and impact of these supports in nine districts. The AIR team reviewed the evaluation findings and identified successes and areas for improvement.

We provide information that clients can easily put to use.

AIR has evaluated Denver’s Teacher Residency program for more than four years. The AIR team went beyond merely providing a summary of what is working and what is not, instead we offered real-time feedback to identify challenges that could diminish the program’s effectiveness and served as thought partners to help the district make important midcourse corrections.
