FAA Human Factors Study

Aviation industry professionals, including airline dispatchers and pilots, rely upon information management systems, tools, and equipment to perform their daily job duties. For example, pilots and dispatchers receive information regarding temporary changes to runways, navigation aids, and other aviation components via the Federal Aviation Administration’s Notices to Airmen (NOTAM) System. The information relayed by these systems directly supports and influences the decisions that aviation professionals make on the line. AIR is currently conducting research to determine how aviation professionals conceptualize the information conveyed in the NOTAM system, their process and delivery requirements and expectations, and whether the software systems that create and deliver these data can be used successfully.
