Health Care Talent Task Force Support
Despite considerable investment and cross-agency efforts, challenges persist in recruiting, retaining, and maintaining the healthcare workforce.
From 2019 to 2020, AIR assisted the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) and its Health Care Talent Task Force to identify promising practices and approaches to addressing challenges with recruiting, retaining, and maintaining their members’ healthcare workforce.
Our team researched and developed case studies to highlight practices in the following areas as defined by the task force:
- Building the infrastructure to collect and access workforce data;
- Developing programs to encourage individuals to enter and remain in healthcare fields;
- Expanding organizations’ workforce development capacity to provide training;
- Removing barriers to transition for qualified professionals into health career; and
- Fostering diversity in the workforce.
To assist the task force with this work, the AIR team:
- Provided expert review on the final task force report to HAP leadership and members;
- Helped to refine the occupational data analysis that served as the background for describing the workforce challenges faced by hospitals and other providers; and
- Provided thought partnership to HAP to expand representation of veterans and military spouses in Pennsylvania’s healthcare workforce by recommending that it review other states' legislative efforts on this topic.
This work informed HAP’s recommendations for policy, and next steps to strengthen policies and programs designed to help attract and retain the healthcare workforce to address health needs of Pennsylvania’s families.
