Improving Safety Data (FAA)

AIR supported the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA’s) Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP)—the voluntary safety reporting program—for over 10 years. Our work was geared primarily toward assisting participating air carriers with evaluating the voluminous data that result from the reports that their employees submit that identify threats to safety.

For example, AIR developed of a taxonomy of causal contributors to pilot error for use in classifying reports. AIR also conducted a best practices evaluation of ASAP. To support improvements in performance by the Event Review Committees who adjudicate air carrier ASAP reports, AIR used instructional systems design methods to develop and evaluate ASAP training modules.
