Fostering a Positive and Safe School Environment for Teaching and Learning

First administered in the spring of the 1999–2000 school year, the School Survey on Crime and Safety (SSOCS) provided information about school crime-related topics from the school’s perspective. AIR played a pivotal role in every SSOCS administration since its inception, providing support throughout the survey process.

Supporting the Development and Publication of the Indicators of School Crime and Safety Reports

For two decades, AIR supported the development and publication of Indicators of School Crime and Safety, an annual flagship report jointly sponsored by the National Center for Education Statistics and the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The report presents more than 20 indicators—including school shootings, bullying, and mental health services—that empower policymakers and practitioners to make evidence-based decisions, design effective prevention strategies, and improve safety for students and staff.

Safe Place to Learn Resource Kit

The Safe Place to Learn resource package, developed by AIR's National Center for Safe Supportive Learning Environments, provides a range of materials to support school efforts to prevent and eliminate peer-to-peer sexual harassment and sexual violence. This resource package supports school district and school staff efforts to comply with Title IX sex discrimination prohibitions and create a positive school climate.
